Emergency Information

During an emergency, access to timely and accurate information is essential. The Stanford emergency team strives to provide ongoing incident updates whenever possible.

The procedures below outline different ways to obtain information about emergencies and incidents affecting the campus.

AlertSU

AlertSU is Stanford University’s emergency notification strategy used to communicate time-sensitive information during an emergency event affecting campus. The nature of the incident will determine which of the following methods will be employed to alert the campus community:

Mass Notification System

Registered members of the Stanford community can receive messages via SMS text message, email, and/or phone. For more information, visit the AlertSU Website.

Outdoor Warning System

The outdoor warning system incorporates seven sirens throughout main campus, which can emit alert tones and verbal instructions to people who are outside during an emergency.

Emergency Website

The Stanford emergency website is periodically updated by staff members. Alerts sent through the mass notification system are automatically posted to the emergency website, which anyone can access.

Emergency Alert System

The Emergency Alert System (EAS) is a national public warning system that requires broadcasters, cable television systems, wireless cable systems, satellite digital audio radio service (SDARS) providers, and direct broadcast satellite (DBS) providers to allow the president to address the American public during a national emergency. The system may also be used by state and local authorities to deliver emergency information, such as AMBER alerts and weather warnings, for targeted areas.

Follow reports on area “Emergency Alert System” radio stations (e.g. KCBS 740 AM or KGO 810 AM) and television stations.
