Russell Furr has been appointed the new Associate Vice Provost and Director of Environmental Health and Safety at Stanford University

The Dean of Research is pleased to announce the appointment of Russell Furr to be the Associate Vice Provost and Director of Environmental Health (EH&S) effective July 1, 2018. Most recently, Russell has served as the Deputy Director of EH&S and Director of Research Safety at Stanford since 2015, and brings with him over two decades of health and safety leadership experience in higher education. Russell has been an innovative leader and a committed advocate for integrated safety and campus wellbeing.

In his role as the Associate Vice Provost for Environmental Health and Safety, Russell reports to the Vice Provost and Dean of Research and serves as the senior institutional official for the management of Environmental and Safety programs for the University community. This includes Research Safety, Emergency Management, Office of the Fire Marshal, Environmental Protection Program, and the Occupational Health Center.

Russell is well known to the Stanford community from his work as Deputy Director and because his career began here, with nearly twelve years in EH&S leadership positions including Manager of Hazardous Material and Safety & Compliance Assistance Programs. He received his Masters in Public Health from the University of California Berkeley, and a dual BS/BA degree in Biochemistry and Chemistry from North Carolina State University.

Before returning to Stanford as Deputy Director, Russell was the Director of Environmental Safety, Sustainability & Risk at the University of Maryland, College Park with responsibilities for the Offices of Research Safety, Risk Management, Emergency Management, and Sustainability. Russell reorganized the department to create an Office of Research Safety to better support the research community.

Stanford is nationally recognized as a leader in environmental health and safety and I am honored that I’ve been tasked with leading the effort to build on those past efforts. Our mission is to integrate health and safety seamlessly with the work of the campus community and support decision makers in taking actions consistent with an uncompromising commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
