Radiation Environmental Monitoring

Owners

Environmental monitoring is the measurement of external radiation fields due to sources in the environment or radionuclide concentrations in environmental media. Monitor radiation-producing devices and areas with potential for the release of radioactivity into the atmosphere to ensure that radiation levels are kept as low as reasonably acheivable (ALARA).

The environmental monitoring of radiation on campus involves:

  • the measurement of external radiation fields using thermos-luminescent dosimeters
  • the measurement of radionuclide concentrations in the air using air sampling devices

Health Physics can provide assistance with establishing an environmental monitoring program. If you have any radiation hazard concerns or to request this service, please contact Health Physics at (650) 723-3201.
