How to Use

The Stanford University Local Aerosol Transmissible Disease Biosafety Plan – Laboratories (Local ATD – Labs) addresses research laboratory workers. The ATD requires that laboratories adopt standard biosafety practices to protect lab workers handling materials containing pathogens that may spread through aerosols and cause serious disease. In addition, the employer must develop, implement, and annually review a written ATD Biosafety Plan (Plan).

As per the Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL), the Stanford University Administrative Panel on Biosafety (APB) oversees issues covered in the California OSHA Aerosol Transmissible Disease (ATD) standard. An approved APB protocol covers requirements for laboratories.

To set up a Local ATD – Labs plan, follow these steps:

  1. Review the list of biological agents covered by the ATD standard on research laboratories.
    1. If your lab uses any of the listed agents, go to step 2.
    2. If your lab does not use any of the listed agents, no further action is needed. If, in the future, your research includes any of the listed agents, you must comply with the standard.
  2. Download a copy of the Stanford University Local ATD Plan – Laboratories.
  3. Complete and review the plan. Use the information and training materials provided with your approved APB protocol(s) to complete the form and review with applicable members of your lab. The completed plan includes the Local ATD document along with approved APB protocol(s).
  4. Review the plan annually or when changes are made (new personnel, agents, standard operating procedures (SOPs), etc).

File the plan in your lab where personnel and inspection authorities can easily access it.
