With 40+ academic, teaching and research-support shops on campus and satellite/ field locations, academic shop safety is an essential part of the Stanford academic experience. Shop safety activities include: metal-working and machining, wood-working and carpentry, electrical/electronic work, glass blowing/ forming, scenery costumery and set building, art sculpture and architecture building/ modeling, research/ device building, mechanics and vehicle building/ maintenance, 3D plastic and metal printing, and many others.
Under the direction of the University President’s Office via the University Committee on Health and Safety (UCHS) and Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), the Shop Safety Program provides shop-management tools and guidance, outlines safe work requirements and procedures, and guides training and record keeping for all work conducted in Academic Shops.
Shop Safety Committee
The Shop Safety Committee is a community-based group of shop managers, safety professionals, and academic support staff striving to develop and support a safe shop environment campus-wide.
Anyone from the Stanford community with interest may join the Shop Safety Committee! Are you passionate about makerspaces and shops? Join the Shop Safety Committee to develop further initiatives and create a safe making environment at Stanford. For Shop Users:
Shop Users are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the shop safety requirements, procedures, and practices before working in a shop space. Please work directly with the Shop Managers on special training required by individual shops.

- Locate a shop and/or making space on campus that suits your needs

For Shop Managers:
Shop Managers are responsible for enrolling their shops / makerspaces into the Shop Safety Committee’s database when the shop is first established and annually thereafter. The format for maintaining records of their space users is up to each Shop Manager.
- Submit the Academic Shop/ Makerspace Designation / MOU form for each shop to maintain up-to-date information for the campus-wide database. This includes shop / makerspaces that are provided to Student Organizations.
- Direct shop users to register with the shop through your own form. If an electronic record keeping system is needed, utilize or reference the Shop Safety Authorized User Qualification Form.
- Reference the First Aid & Emergency Response Training Outline for Shop Managers/Monitors (SUNet log-in required to access)
