Prions and Prion-like Proteins
Anyone working with prions, prion-like proteins or other Spongiform encephalopathies that may be present in brain tissue must call the Biosafety Manager, 725.1473. Slow viruses such as Kuru are included in this group. Prions and prion-like proteins (see Chapter 4 for a definition of prion-like proteins) are highly resistant to conventional decontamination, and laboratories are strongly encouraged to use only disposable equipment. Specific procedures for decontamination and disposal must be followed when working with prions and prion-like proteins.
